For years, skeptics have questioned the efficacy of Smart Pots, often citing concerns about overheating in the sun and increased watering needs. But a recent study conducted by the Texas A&M University Department of Horticulture Sciences has put these doubts to rest, delivering compelling evidence that Smart Pots promote superior shrub growth compared to conventional plastic containers. This article first appeared in: Subtropical Plant Science Journal of the Rio Grande Valley Horticultural Society (Volume 58, 2006).

The study, focused on the growth of Knock Out™ Roses, evaluated two key factors: substrate type (peat-based vs. pine bark) and container material (Smart Pots vs. conventional black plastic). The results were clear and insightful:

  • Across both substrate types, roses grown in Smart Pots exhibited significantly better shoot growth compared to those in conventional plastic containers
  • The best growth performance was observed with the combination of pine bark substrate and Smart Pots
  • During hot days, Smart Pots kept root temperatures 18.6°C lower compared to plastic containers. This cooler environment likely contributed to improved root health and ultimately, better growth
  • An additional significant finding was the reduction of root deflection and circling by approximately fivefold in Smart Pots

This study was conducted at the Dept. Horticultural Sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843-2133

This Texas A&M study provides strong evidence that Smart Pots offer several advantages for growing shrubs and other plants compared to traditional plastic containers. The improved root health, cooler root zone temperatures, and potential for better growth make Smart Pots a compelling choice for serious gardeners.

So, the next time you hear concerns about Smart Pots and heat, remember this: science is on your side. By considering the findings of this study and the unique benefits of Smart Pots, you can ensure your garden flourishes with vibrant, healthy plants that reward you with their beauty and bounty.
