3 months earlier

Reached the study’s market size sooner

UF/IFAS · Viburnum · 2021–22

Study details & source

Plants started in 3-gallon Smart Pots reached the trial’s 7-gallon market specification 2 months after shifting; plants started in plastic took 5 months. Both groups were shifted into 7-gallon plastic containers.

Florida nursery trial with 25 plants per group. Irrigation was adjusted to maintain comparable moisture; Smart Pots received about 1.8× as much water during the initial phase.

6°C cooler

Lower daily maximum root-zone temperature

HortScience · Dwarf Burford holly · 2022

Study details & source

Maximum daily substrate temperature averaged 6°C lower in fabric containers than plastic, measured 3 cm from the southwest-facing wall. The two 31-week trials used 18 L of bark-peat substrate.

Fabric containers required 66% more irrigation water in these trials. Nitrogen and phosphorus losses in leachate were lower. Irrigation planning matters.

Root deflection and circling

Texas A&M · Knock Out roses · 2005 trial

Study details & source

Roses in 11 L Smart Pots had approximately fivefold less root deflection and circling than roses in conventional black plastic containers across two substrates.

A Texas A&M nursery trial compared pine-bark and peat-based mixes. The researchers assessed deflected and circling roots at the container wall.

Our story began with trees

A tree farmer’s idea. A growing legacy.

Oklahoma tree farmer Ralph Reiger began experimenting with fabric containers in 1980. After harvesting the first trial trees in 1982, he founded Root Control, Inc. in 1984.

That nursery experience is still at the heart of Smart Pot and High Caliper Growing: practical products, built around better root systems.

  2. 1982 The successful August harvest proves the root-pruning idea
