American-Made Fabric Growing Containers
Sort by:
Grow stronger plants with the fabric container that changed the way roots grow. Smart Pot is the original root-pruning planter, proudly made in the USA from performance fabric that is BPA and lead free, safe for growing food. Gardeners and professional growers have trusted Smart Pot since 1984 because it delivers healthier roots, better growth, and easier success.
Why Smart Pot works
-
Air-prunes roots, no circling
When roots reach the fabric wall, they stop and branch. You get a dense, fibrous root system instead of a few thick roots wrapping the pot. -
Cooler, healthier root zone
Breathable fabric lets heat escape and keeps roots closer to ideal temperatures compared to plastic. -
Even moisture through the mix
The porous wall reduces water channeling, so more of your soil stays active and available to roots. -
Built for real-world use
UV-stable, weather tough, and made to last through seasons of sun, rain, and repeat plantings. -
Safe for edibles
BPA and lead free materials give peace of mind when you grow vegetables, herbs, and fruit. -
Made in the USA
The original fabric container, supporting American manufacturing for over 40 years.
Results you can see
More roots mean more shoots, more flowers, and more harvest. Smart Pot helps plants establish faster, feed more efficiently, and handle heat better. In side-by-side nursery and university trials, plants grown in fabric with air pruning developed larger, more balanced root systems and reached marketable size sooner than those in rigid plastic. That same advantage shows up at home in raised beds, patios, and small spaces.
What to grow
Smart Pots are great for vegetables, herbs, berries, flowers, and small trees. Choose your size based on the plant and your space. A few easy ideas:
-
Herbs and greens in smaller sizes for quick kitchen harvests
-
Tomatoes, peppers, and compact shrubs in mid sizes
-
Potatoes, blueberries, and larger mixes of veggies in bigger sizes
-
Extra-large sizes for instant garden beds or specimen planting

Compost Sak For Performance Composting
The Smart Pot Compost Sak is a large fabric bag that is lightweight yet extremely durable and lasts for years. This rugged fabric is entirely porous, containing many micropores that allow for contact air circulation and drainage. The fitted cover is a flexible plastic top designed to increase heat and help manage moisture in the mix, thereby accelerating the composting process.
How to Use
Open the Sak, set it on level ground, and start adding your compostable materials. Next, place the cover over the Sak. That's all there is to it.
The key to successful composting is to have a mix of materials that isn't too wet or too dry - just moist with enough oxygen to support microscopic life along with insects and earthworms. Too wet, and it becomes a soggy mess, too dry, and nothing happens. Composting is all about providing an environment for microbes. These critters, fungi and bacteria, and others inhabit the compost pile and feed on the organic material, breaking it down into pure compost.
The Compost Sak permeate fabric allows plenty of oxygen, while the fitted cover helps with moisture and temperature control. To speed up the process, turn the pile every week, bringing in more oxygen. If the Compost Sak starts to lean as more compostables are added, simply turn the mix and redistribute the compost inside the Sak.
Brown and Green - The Perfect Mix
Green materials such as grass clippings, vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, and other kitchen scraps provide nitrogen. Brown materials such as dead leaves, straw, shredded paper, dryer lint, etc., provide carbon. Together they create the perfect environment for the microbes in your compost. For the ideal mix, try an approximate ratio of two parts brown to one part green.
Smart Pot Transplanter simplifies transplanting and reduces transplant stress, enhancing survivability. Its open-side design provides easy access to the plant, eliminating the need to damage tender transplants by squeezing, pounding, or tearing plastic pots.
Crafted from the same award-winning fabric as the original Smart Pot, this transplanter retains all its benefits. These revolutionary aeration containers create ideal growing conditions by facilitating easy airflow and water circulation. This ensures that roots remain cool, receive ample oxygen, and never become soggy. As the roots reach the fabric, they undergo air pruning, stimulating lateral root development and preventing root boundness. This results in thicker, larger, and denser root structures with numerous small, fibrous feeder roots, eliminating the need for root circles that hinder growth.
The focus on the roots is key. More root surface area leads to improved water and nutrient absorption, resulting in bigger, healthier, and faster-growing plants that are more resistant to pests and illnesses. These plants also produce more abundant yields, averaging 3X higher. Smart Pot Fabric Transplanters are suitable for various plants, including vegetables, flowers, bulbs, and ornamentals, as well as aquatic plants.
Environmentally friendly, Smart Pots are BPA-free, lead-free, and chemically inert, ensuring that no harmful chemicals leach into the soil. They are washable, reusable, and durable, with a lifespan of 3 to 5 years. When it’s time to clean your Smart Pots, simply turn them inside out, dry them thoroughly, and remove any hardened soil. Alternatively, soak them in a solution of vinegar and water for 24 hours, occasionally agitating the mixture, and rinse thoroughly. Alternatively, you can use a washing machine. However, it’s crucial to dry the pots in the sun rather than using a dryer.

Pond Pots' pliable fabric conforms to sloping or uneven pond floors and remains tough and durable for years. Pond Pots' flexibility allows plants to be placed between rocks and other form-fitting areas. The fabric can be folded down to adjust planter height as needed.

FAQs
Our products are proudly made in the USA and the quality is unmatched. Some of the competitors are so thin that the bag will rip on you in a very short time. Others are so thick that they do not air prune so you don’t get the best roots. If it is too thick, it also won’t drain well which causes root rot that can destroy your plant.
Smart Pot is the original fabric pot and we have innovated the design specifically to maximize the development of a healthy root system. Our fabric not only lasts longer – it drains, air prunes, and release heat better.
Feel the small fibers, or hairs, on the inside of a Smart Pot. These fibers catch a plant’s small, fibrous feeder roots and force them to branch and prune. Feel the inside of our competitor bags. There is a slick feel to most of them. Roots turn and circle on a slick surface. The growth pattern of roots traveling along a slick surface is not optimal. With the Smart Pot, roots stop at the side wall and branch.
The answer is… just about any surface!
Smart Pot containers perform great on dirt, grass, cement, landscape fabric, wood, etc. Make sure there is some slight slope if you are putting your Smart Pot on a non-porous surface. Just enough so there is no standing water for extended periods.
If you have a treated wood deck, it might be wise to have your Smart Pot (and all potted plants) in a saucer. Many users combine bricks or stones to elevate the Smart Pot out of standing runoff water.
Users have placed, especially large Smart Pots, on wooden pallets, which increases drainage, aeration, and air-pruning of the roots. Because aeration is increased significantly, users may need to irrigate a bit more frequently.
Yes, you can use Smart Pot containers and grow organic. They are made of inert, porous, geo-textile fabric. As opposed to a few of our competitor containers, we are BPA-free. There is no meaningful chemical exchange with the surrounding environment. Many of our customers grow vegetables and other edibles in our containers.
Many of our competitor bags are made from recycled plastics in China. In the recycle process, plastics are melted down. Heavy metals do not dissolve in this process, but are left over to be formed into the next batch of fabric. Therefore, heavy metals can and do build up in many competitor bags. Lead and copper are the most common left over heavy metals, but it depends on what plastics are being recycled that week. Sometimes the batch is clean, sometimes not. The Smart Pot is made of clean, specified, virgin fabric so we avoid heavy metal buildup.
Our fabric has been independently tested and is BPA free, lead free, and free from other harmful chemicals. Check out our MSDS for more details.
After using dump out the soil and let the bag dry. After a few days of being dry, the dust and small roots will easily brush off. For most people, this is good enough. At this point the container folds easily for storage. However, a lot of our customers will wash the bags in OxyClean or peroxide to sterilize. They use a washing machine or dip the container in a tub. Do not put Smart Pot fabric containers in a dryer.
